In 2012, it occurred to David Ponte and Dave Mackley to take advantage of a freedom in the music streaming market that certainly couldn't last.

The opportunity presented prompted them to provide artists with "a free and unlimited way to share their music," to quote McLeay. After spending many sleepless nights and dozens of hours at work on weekends, he and three other partners co-founded Audiomack, a free platform that allowed aspiring musicians who could not yet afford to pay monthly or annual membership fees to distribution companies to upload their tracks to the streaming site.

Keeping prices low for everyone involved was an integral part of the company's business model.

Audiomack's founders cultivated a simple and niche value proposition: find artists looking for new fans. To that end, the company built and refined a platform to develop as a free service, monetizing revenue from advertising, and ensuring quality control of its catalog by implementing a playlisting feature and song ranking system.

Since its inception, the site has become a hub for fresh albums, numerous singles and nostalgic mixtapes, and especially those that cannot be found on Spotify or Apple Music. They have been warmly embraced by youth and hip-hop culture (70% of the audience is under 34)-but the platform is expanding into other genres, including reggae, Latino and Afrobeat.

The company has grown by 300%, with more than 1 million daily active users and more than 1 billion monthly song plays. In August, they introduced a subscription model that has since been signed up by more than 10,000 people willing to pay $5 a month.
